Student Spotlight - Heritage Landing’s Underdown Represents Students at January BOE Meeting

The first thing one might notice about Eric Underdown is that you will have to look up to see him. He was the tallest person in the room when he represents the students at the Francis Howell School District Board of Education meeting in January. However, it’s his growth as a student and a person that has made his story a success.

Eric Underdown is a senior at Heritage Landing, and he is set to graduate this year in May. His principal at Heritage Landing, Dr. Anthony Haan, definitely is rooting for the young man. “I have had the opportunity to know him for a few years now,” Dr. Haan said. “I believe eight years. When I was at Castlio (Elementary) for a few years, I actually got to work with Eric, as well.” Obviously, Underdown is a couple feet taller now than he was when Dr. Haan taught him in elementary school. He said, “So it’s kind of neat to see him grow … not just physically … but in a lot of other ways, as well.”

Growth has been a hallmark for Underdown. In his second year at Lewis and Clark Technical School’s Welding Program, Underdown will earn his certificate from that school upon completion and graduation. Welding, the art of fusing materials together, is a job that is in high demand – especially for skilled welders like Underdown. And after doing well in the Lewis and Clark welding competitions, he is considering the continuation of his education in that field when he graduates in May.

Underdown has grown physically and academically, as evidenced above. But he has also grown as a person, helping his community whenever possible. Dr. Haan explained, “Another accolade of Eric’s is earning of his Eagle Scout badge in December 2017.” Eagle Scout is the highest achievement/rank attainable in the Boy Scouts of America program, and only 4 percent of Boy Scouts rise to such heights. So being a part of the Board Meeting was just another example of Eric Underwood doing his civic duty and trying to make his community a better place. That’s something we can all look up to.
